What Is Etching?

Etching is a chemical reaction that occurs when acidic substances contact calcium-based stones like marble, travertine, and limestone. The acid literally dissolves a microscopic layer of the stone, leaving a dull, lighter-colored mark.

Common Causes of Etching

• Citrus fruits and juices (lemon, lime, orange)
• Vinegar and vinegar-based cleaners
• Wine and alcohol
• Coffee and tea
• Tomato sauce and ketchup
• Many household cleaning products

Etching vs. Staining

This is a critical distinction:

• Stains are darker than the surrounding stone — a substance has penetrated the pores.
• Etch marks are lighter/duller than the surrounding stone — the surface has been chemically damaged.

Stain removal requires drawing the substance out. Etch repair requires re-polishing the damaged surface.

Can You Fix Etching Yourself?

Minor etching can sometimes be buffed out with a marble polishing powder. However, DIY methods often leave a visible difference between the repaired spot and the surrounding stone.

Professional Etch Removal

Professional restoration involves:

1. Cleaning the area thoroughly
2. Honing with diamond abrasives to remove the etched layer
3. Polishing to match the surrounding finish
4. Blending the repaired area seamlessly into the rest of the surface

Done correctly, the repair is virtually invisible.

Preventing Future Etching

• Use coasters under all glasses
• Wipe spills immediately with a soft cloth
• Never use acidic or abrasive cleaners
• Use cutting boards for food prep
• Apply a quality sealer (this slows down acid penetration)
